The Kicks You Wear, Vol. 216 — Did SNKRS just get a bit harder?
The Georgetown Jordan 1 drop seems like it was a mess
What’s good, family! Welcome back to the Kicks You Wear. Thank you so much for rocking with your boy.
DON’T FORGET. We are still on the road to 5,000 subscribers. We’re making progress, but we’ve still got a ways to go. And a pair of shoes awaits one of y’all at the end. Subscribe if you haven’t already!
Let’s jump in.
Nike done hit y’all with that Georgetown Press
Just when I thought the SNKRS app couldn’t get any harder. Boy was I wrong.
The skinny: The Air Jordan 1 “Georgetown” drop over the weekend was certainly one of the most hyped releases from Nike we’ve seen so far in 2022. So, of course, it was a dumpster fire.
Nike used a drawing that was open for 23 minutes as opposed to the regular 10 and it completely threw everything off-kilter.
You’re probably asking yourself why that’s a problem. I mean, the more time for people to enter the better, right? Sure, that’s the case for more detailed raffles with better filters. But something as simple as putting in a password and hopping in a line? That’s an issue.
Here’s why:
That 23-minute window allows more time for literally everyone to get in. Bots, humans, flying unicorns. Whoever wanted a pair had ample time to jump in.
That’s cool. But it also drastically decreases the chances of you individually grabbing a pair. Which, in turn, leads to more frustration.
And at the root of it all is the actual stock of the shoe, which isn’t very much at all. There were allegedly just over 11,000 pairs of these available. You really might be more likely to get into Georgetown than to cop these kicks.
Between the lines: Now, look. You can’t always trust these numbers. But from the way things went? Even if this wasn’t the exact number it doesn’t seem like it was very far off. We all knew these were limited and we know what that means. But that’s why that window was so frustrating to see.
The only time a window gets opened that wide is usually when numbers are big. Lots of people get in. Lots of people leave happy. That wasn’t the case here.
This is a supply and demand issue. That’s what it boils down to. There simply are not enough shoes to go around for everyone. Most who tried to cop just left frustrated. And that’s all too common these days.
Remember that mistrust we talked about last week? This drop right here is where that comes from.
This was Nike legitimately dangling a carrot in front of thousands of folks just knowing that there was no way most were leaving satisfied.
This is what the sneakerhead goes through week after week. It’s frustrating. It’s exhausting. It’s unhealthy.
The game we play isn’t fair. It defies all logic. It makes no sense and we still comes back. We’re Wile E Coyote chasing the Roadrunner. We take all the right steps to set the perfect trap so we can finally catch that stupid bird just to say we did it. But in the end, despite all our measures, the anvil still winds out on top of our collective heads.
I ask you, how many times are we going to continue getting our heads bashed in?
Let’s see how this Virgil drop goes
Here we go, folks. The Off-White Nike Blazer is set to drop next week as the first posthumous release of Virgil Abloh done exclusively with Nike.
It’s not the first overall. That was the Louis Vuitton Air Force 1’s that released earlier this year.
These are different, however, in that they’re purely an Off-White x Nike drop.
The background: The drop won’t be without Abloh’s touch. It’s been reported that his wife, Shannon, will oversee the drop with Nike to make sure it meets whatever his wishes were for it. It’s great to know that someone close to Virgil will, at the very least, be overseeing this.
What I’m watching for:
I’m wondering if the proceeds here will benefit Abloh’s Post-Modern foundation as they did from the Air Force 1. That was nice to see.
I’m also curious to see how the resale market behaves. Obviously, there’s always been a premium on Off-White via the aftermarket. But they jumped again after his death.
Lastly, how many more of these are we going to get? Virgil clearly had projects in the tuck he was working on. Will there be more or are we done after this? How much did he plan for?
Let’s be real: These aren’t questions that we’re getting answers to anytime soon. But these are the things we should be thinking about as we try to move forward in a sneaker world without Virgil in it.
His touch and his projects will continue to live on. I just hope they’re done in a way that is tasteful and not at all harmful to his legacy.
This Unboxed Bracket is down to the Final Four…and the people are wylin
Good to know y’all are still in love with the Jordan 1. At least, according to this Final Four you are.
Wait, what? The homies over at Unboxed put together a BOMB bracket filled with classics and new heat. Yet…somehow we ended up with THREE Jordan 1’s in the Final Four along with maybe the most hyped Jordan 4 ever.
This is wild.
A few thoughts from me:
Again, SO. MANY. JORDAN. 1S. Where is the diversity? People didn’t even like this shoe in 2015. Now folks can’t get enough of it.
Also, no Dunks? Mo from Unboxed tells me they didn’t even make it to the Elite 8. The last one was the Chunky Dunky which…OK. I guess, y’all.
What we need to see: I’m tired of the Jordan 1 but give me OG Chicago vs. Off-White Chicago in the final. I just want to see the chaos ensue. That’s all I’m rooting for now.
Gon head over to IG and pop in your vote.

I was blessed by Lapstone & Hammer and won their raffle for the Georgetown Js. After the huge letdown of the AJ3 muslin drop I’m glad I didn’t have to put my hope in SNKRS
Yo this was so educational! Bless up!
