What’s good, family! Thanks for rocking with me this week! Hope you’re having a fantastic one so far.
A lot of y’all had a lot to say about Jay Gordon’s quote in the NYT piece this week — specifically, his audacity to consider a 45-minute sellout “disappointing.”
I wanted to dig a little bit deeper into that with y’all. For me, it was disappointing to see that coming from Bodega — that’s a shop I consider to really be here for the people. So this quote was surprising for me, obviously.
What’d you think? Let me know something in the comments!
I definitely though that comment was odd, considering it did sell out and some of the problem was technical on Shopify’s end apparently. It is a problem that they would rather have a super fast sell out, probably with bots, just for the hype. Personally, I thought the sneaker in question wasn’t a great colorway anyway, but it did sell out and is selling above retail on the secondary market, so not sure what the complaining is about.
To me, it just reinforced how much they care about the resell market and even though they don't see profits from it, they see it as indicators as to how well other releasees will do in the future. It shouldn't matter if it sells out in 5 seconds or 5 days IMO - it sold out didn't it? Product didn't have to sit on shelves or storage. It moved and they made the same amount of money, but they want the "hype" and that might be more important than getting those of us who want to actually rock our kicks access from a business perspective.
If it doesn’t sellout in less than 15 minutes, it’s considered a failure.”
In the words of Jay-Z “What more can I sayyyyyy.” - nothing. That says everything one in this sneaker game for the love of kicks needs to know about how these retailers feel about you. They don’t care about those bots, for real. They don’t care about the consumer, for real. They care about that coin and they don’t care about where it comes from, the manner in which their inventory is acquired, at whose expense it comes, as long as those jawns are sold out in less than 15 minutes.
Agree. It was really sad to hear that coming from Bodega but it finally validates what most of us have been saying for a while now. Those stores give zero fucks who is buying and how, as long as they go quickly.
It got me heated cuz a 45 minute window to cop something would be perfect and that quote pretty much confirms it'll never be like that. I'm too old to be waking up early for a 5 minute chance
“If it doesn’t sell in 15 minutes” isn’t just a hype issue - it’s a cold, boring logistics issue. This makes me wonder if many links in the chain are trying to save on storage by trying to push product through the channel ASAP. And extrapolating that out from shops to the makers…just how Just In Time are they running things?

It all sucks.

That really sucked to hear that from Bodega.
Bodega uses old raffle software, they should adapt to the times and get on Shopify for secure drops...and let's stop saying y'all 😝
